World Youth Skills Day: Why It Matters – And Why It Matters to Us at Business 2 Business

Every year on 15 July, organisations, educators, employers and communities across the world come together to mark World Youth Skills Day — a global initiative created by the United Nations to highlight the importance of equipping young people with the skills they need for employment, entrepreneurship and meaningful participation in society. But beyond the global recognition, this day is a powerful reminder of a much more urgent and local reality: the future of our workforce — and our economy — depends on how well we prepare and support young people today.

Why World Youth Skills Day Is So Important

At its core, World Youth Skills Day addresses one of the biggest challenges facing modern economies: the gap between young people and opportunity. The labour market is evolving rapidly, driven by technology, AI and economic shifts. As a result, young people need more than qualifications; they need adaptable, real-world skills that help them transition into work and build sustainable careers. This highlights the need for better access to training and development, stronger links between education and employment, and greater collaboration between businesses, policymakers and communities. Investing in youth skills is essential for driving economic growth, social mobility and long-term resilience.

The Reality on the Ground: A National Challenge

At Business 2 Business, we see first hand that this is not a theoretical issue — it is a national challenge. As highlighted in our Midlands Economic Summit 2026 speech, youth unemployment sits at the heart of productivity, growth and the future of our economy. Over one million young people in the UK are currently not in education, employment or training — roughly one in seven — with an estimated economic cost of £125 billion per year. These figures represent a generation at risk of being disconnected from opportunity before their careers have even begun.

Our Role: Championing Youth Employment

For over four decades, Business 2 Business has worked at the heart of communities, alongside employers and young people, to close the gap between talent and opportunity. We support young people into work through tailored employability support, helping them build confidence, develop skills and secure meaningful jobs. We bridge the gap between skills and employers by working directly with businesses to ensure recruitment is inclusive and aligned with real capabilities. Through practical, work-focused training and strong partnerships, we prepare young people for the realities of the workplace and support sustainable employment outcomes.

Turning Commitment into Action

World Youth Skills Day is not just about awareness — it is a call to action. Addressing youth unemployment requires system-wide collaboration, long-term investment and a clear focus on what works in practice. Young people are not the problem; they are part of the solution. They bring energy, innovation and untapped potential that businesses and the economy need to thrive.

Looking Ahead: A Shared Responsibility

World Youth Skills Day reminds us that skills change lives — but only if opportunity follows. At Business 2 Business, we remain committed to creating pathways, removing barriers and ensuring no young person is left behind. By investing in young people, we strengthen communities, drive economic growth and build a more inclusive society for everyone.
